Therapy Through Creative Expression

HIGH WEST COUNSELING

Therapy that uses creative expression to support your journey of identity, self-discovery, and healing.

Identity isn't always something you can talk your way into understanding. Whether you're questioning your gender or sexuality, redefining yourself after a major life change, or simply trying to understand who you are outside of what others have expected of you — the parts of yourself still coming into focus don't always fit neatly into words.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Hunter Metcalf, CSW-I, incorporates creative and expressive interventions alongside traditional talk therapy, to help you access, process, and express what's underneath. This isn't about being a good artist or making something polished. It's about giving parts of you that haven't had room to speak a way to be heard.

We welcome clients of all gender identities, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences. Wherever you are in understanding yourself, you're welcome here.

When Talk Therapy Isn't Enough

Traditional talk therapy assumes that insight comes through conversation — that if you can talk about it, you can work through it. But that's not true for everyone, and it doesn't mean something is wrong with you if it hasn't worked.

Creative and expressive approaches can be especially helpful if you're:

  • Neurodivergent and find purely verbal processing exhausting, inaccessible, or not how your brain naturally works

  • Living with trauma stored in the body as sensation or reaction rather than clear memory or language

  • Alexithymic or someone who struggles to identify or name emotions, even when you know something is there

  • Someone who's been in talk therapy before and felt like you were "talking around" things without real movement or relief

  • More comfortable expressing yourself through making or writing than through spoken conversation, whether that's cultural, temperamental, or simply how you're wired

If any of this sounds familiar, it doesn't mean therapy has failed you — it may mean you haven't yet had access to the right entry point.
